Overview

The law is clear that to avoid liability for unlawful harassment claims, employers must take preventive steps. One such preventative step is effective, professional training. This course includes information specific to New York employees.

Objectives

  • Understand what workplace harassment is based on any protected characteristics — with examples and an explanation that harassment is a form of discrimination under the law (local, state, and federal)
  • Understand what sexual harassment is — with examples and an explanation that sexual harassment is a form of unlawful discrimination under the law (local, state, and federal)
  • Understand the internal complaint process (reporting to any supervisor or HR) that is available to employees through their employer to address sexual harassment claims. Employers should provide employee participants with contact information for the individuals within their company who accept complaints.
  • Be informed of the complaint process available through the NYC Commission on Human Rights, the New York State Division of Human Rights, and the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, including contact information
  • Understand the prohibition on retaliation in the workplace, including examples
  • Understand bystander intervention, including practical tools employees could use to engage in bystander intervention
  • Understand the responsibilities of supervisory and managerial employees in the prevention of workplace harassment (including sexual harassment) and retaliation

Highlights

  • An overview of workplace harassment and discrimination laws
  • Clear definitions of unlawful harassment, hostile work environment, discrimination, and protected categories
  • An overview of sexual harassment, workplace retaliation, and both internal and external complaint procedures
