Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont Proclaims November 7-11 as Accounting Opportunities Week

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has proclaimed November 7-11, 2022 to be Accounting Opportunities Week in the state of Connecticut.  

“Whereas the accounting profession offers a great variety of engaging career options – both in terms of the diverse organizations for which individuals might work, and the types of varied services they perform; now therefore I, Ned Lamont, Governor of the State of Connecticut, do hereby officially proclaim the week of November 7 - 11, 2022, to be Accounting Opportunities Week,” he said in the proclamation. The Connecticut Society of CPAs (CTCPA) is sending CPAs and accounting professionals into classrooms across Connecticut from November 7-11 as part of Accounting Opportunities Week, a nationwide initiative to inspire high school students and help them learn about everything a career in accounting has to offer.

Accounting Opportunities Week connects CTCPA members with high school students and educators in their local communities. The accounting professionals will speak to students about the vital role accountants play in business and protecting the public, the wide variety of organizations that rely on accounting professionals, as well as what steps a student should take to pursue a career in accounting.   

The presentations will also make the students aware of the many scholarship opportunities available through the CTCPA Accounting Scholarship Foundation, which awards $500 scholarships to 10 Connecticut high school seniors who are planning to major in accounting at a four-year Connecticut college or university each year. The Accounting Scholarship Foundation also awards $5,000 scholarships to community college students, four-year college students, minority accounting majors, and students pursuing the 150-hour requirement to sit for the CPA Exam. The Accounting Scholarship Foundation awards more than $50,000 annually to help the next generation.

Accounting Opportunities Week is part of an extensive CTCPA pipeline and career awareness program that also includes Accounting is My Major (AIM) careers conferences that bring high school students to college campuses, on-campus visits to college and university students, and the popular Interview Day, which this year connected Connecticut employers with high-performing college students for a total of 225 individual interviews in one day.

With a membership of more than 6,000 in public practice, business and industry, government, and education, the CTCPA's mission is to advocate on behalf of the accounting profession, foster a professional community, and provide high-quality professional development opportunities.
