CTCPA Town Hall Meeting Highlights Business Continuity and Cybersecurity Preparedness

November 06, 2024

In October, the CTCPA hosted an informative Town Hall Meeting featuring Melissa Travis, FEMA CISA specialist and CEO of the Rhode Island Society of CPAs . Travis delivered crucial insights on business continuity planning, disaster preparedness, and the pressing challenges of cybersecurity.

Travis started the session by emphasizing the critical need for comprehensive business continuity plans beyond basic strategies. She shared real-life experiences and underscored the importance of staging disaster drills, maintaining up-to-date employee contact lists, and understanding building codes to enhance disaster resilience. With alarming statistics showing that 40% of small businesses fail to reopen after a disaster, her message resonated deeply with attendees.

Utilizing resources like ready.gov, Travis highlighted the benefits of being a "ready business" and the necessity of conducting regular training events. She also discussed the significance of accurate insurance coverage, the risks associated with flood-prone areas, and the importance of inventory assessments to protect equipment.

The meeting concluded with information about the AICPA Benevolent Fund, which offers support during times of need, and an invitation for attendees to suggest topics for future Town Hall meetings. Members were encouraged to explore the resources available on the CTCPA website.
